Are you looking for a place to gather with a group in a beautiful setting?  The Smith Homestead Forest Learning Shelter and Tillamook Forest Center are located at separate sites, half mile from each other, and provide different amenities. At each location, you will be welcomed by the lush, forested settings of the scenic Oregon Coast Range. The facilities available for rent include the Forest Learning Shelter at the Smith Homestead Day Use Area, and the Janet McLennan Community Room inside the Tillamook Forest Center, which can be divided into two spaces (Fireplace and River rooms).

The Janet McLennan Community Room is available for meetings and non-social events. The Forest Learning Shelter is available for social events. Both facilities were built with sustainability in mind and are fully ADA-accessible. Please note that internet is not available at either site at this time. Additional information, policies, and regulations are included in the Facility Rental Packet. Please read thoroughly before filling out a rental reservation form.

Smith Homestead Forest Learning Shelter

The rustic Forest Learning Shelter at the Smith Homestead Day Use Area is located just a half mile east of the Tillamook Forest Center. This space is great for workshops, family gatherings, meetings, or other events.

The shelter features high ceilings, skylights, abundant windows, and a large wood-burning stone fireplace that will add ambience to your gathering. The shelter is fully enclosed with large doors on three sides which can be opened to enhance the connection to the outdoors.

Just outside the west end of the building is a covered paved patio area connected to a large gravel area with sturdy picnic tables. Indoors, seven 8’x3’ tables and fourteen 8’x15” benches provide ample space to seat up to 70. Electric supply is limited so kitchen appliances, such as crock pots, cannot be used. Water is available outside adjacent to the building through a drinking fountain and jug filling spout, however there is no sink or kitchen facility on site. The Smith Homestead is a place to unplug. Wi-Fi and AV equipment are unavailable.

Reservation of this facility includes the shelter, attached covered concrete patio, and adjacent gravel half-circle patio. All other spaces remain open to the public and may not be reserved.

The day use area has two ADA-accessible vault toilets located near the parking area. Limited parking (including RV parking) and additional picnic spaces are available for the general public and cannot be reserved. Carpooling is highly recommended.

  • Please note no internet is available

  • Fireplace use for an additional fee March-May, October-November 

    • Note: Fireplace does not heat the space

  • 1849 square feet  

  • 49’x29’ indoors 

  • 13’x33’ covered outdoor area  

  • 7 tables (8’x3’) 

  • 14 benches (8’x15”)

Capacity:  

  • 75 people maximum 

  • 70 seated 

  • Room will begin in its default setting (pictured)

    • Renters are welcome to rearrange the room during rental​

    • Room must be returned to the default setting and cleaned

 

Availability:  

  • 10:00 AM – 3:30 PM in summer  

  • 10:00 AM – 2:30 PM spring and fall  

  • Unavailable December-February, and Mondays and Tuesdays year-round

 

Rates: 

  • $150/hour for private events

  • 2-hour minimum rental 

  • $500 refundable deposit due when making reservation

  • Partner and non-profit organization at reduced rates. Please contact use for details. 

 

Important Notes:

  • Amplified sound, charcoal grills, and bbq trailers are not permitted at the Smith Homestead  

  • There is no cell service at the Smith Homestead Day Use Area

  • Electric supply is very limited so kitchen appliances such as slow cookers cannot be used

  • Generators are prohibited

  • Spaces outside of the Smith Homestead Forest Learning shelter cannot be reserved including the lawn and parking spaces

  • Surrounding day use area is not available for camping or overnight use.
